Do you all ever just type a blog post/letter/email hoping it will alleviate an issue you have been dealing with…and then completely erase it all? Well, that my friends…is what my night has revolved around. It’s 11:00pm at night + I am still awake, and here lies the issue. Hi, my name is Jessica and I am having sleeping problems. I hope you all instinctively said “hi, jessica” back…because I just laughed really hard hoping you did.

I used to be a morning person. I AM a morning person…normally. Before about two weeks ago, I would hear my alarm and pretty much just pop out of bed ready to tackle the day and now when I hear my alarm I just want to throw the covers over my head and refuse the thought of getting UP. I am barely making it to work on time and I hate feeling rushed in the morning. Is it mental? Am I really THAT tired?….probably. If I take a step back and look at what my day consists of I guess a doctor would tell me I am working myself to death. However, there are little parts of my day that I consider “work”. Let’s see, I get to the design studio I work for during the day at about 8:30am, then I leave at a normal 8-hour shift and get home and begin multitasking random chores + my freelance projects. I work for the remainder of the evening and fit in dinner somewhere around there. Of course, this is not EVERY evening but the rest of the nights are normally booked up as well with other events. I know what most of you are thinking, why are you up writing this blog post? Go to bed! But there’s something about hitting the “publish” button that makes me feel like I am talking to a good friend that is going to give me some good advice.

I just wonder if this is a phase and I will get my mornings back… I miss them. Who is with me??

Any advice my sleep-loving/sleep-deprived friends?

Yoga! I used to teach in Hillcrest but now just do private lessons, and have been practicing myself for almost 9 years. I can almost assure you that with a steady couple hour classes a week, you should have no problem feeling more rested and sleeping better. There has been a phrase in the industry that says ” for every hour class of yoga you do, is one less hour of sleep you need.”
I know how tuff it can be to try and balance everything out, and trying to ADD something else doesnt always seem the smartest way to go, but I’m pretty sure I wouldnt have made it through design school and full time work without it…Try it! Let me know if you need any studio recommendations!

Hi Leah! 🙂 Thank you so much for recommending Yoga. I love that you are a teacher of the wonderful practice! You know what’s funny, I a started taking a few classes here and there recently and I have already noticed a difference. I have been going to Pilgrimage of the Heart… have you been to that studio?

I am going to try to start going more and more till it becomes more of a routine 🙂

Maybe it’s time to weed some things out? Say yes to less? Or maybe right now you just have some pressing issues going through your head that aren’t being adequately addressed, maybe even ignored or pushed to the side, and so waking up is hard to do.
Maybe there’s a bit of a disconnect between you and your reason to jump out of bed in the morning.
Or maybe you’re just low on iron.

I find it hard to get out of bed just about any morning (ahem… afternoon if we are talking days off here) but I think that’s because I haven’t found something totally motivating to jump out of bed for. And I go to bed waaay too late.

Thanks for your comment Corey! I completely agree there could always be things I could weed out to put less stress on myself. It honestly helped even writing this post because the next morning I woke up at 6:30am feeling great. Low iron could definitely be a possibility as well! Welcome to the past 5 years of my life! 🙂

My mother has always told me that I would get used to it & it’d even itself one day but I’m still waiting on that day. I can get in bed at 9pm & still lay there until after midnight which means I wake up exhausted. For some reason my internal time clock broke & never fixed itself.

All I have to say is: Melatonin. Pick some up at the store & it might be your new best friend. It’s a natural supplement that helps sleep & it has worked wonders for me.
