Mixing patterns doesn’t necessarily have to mean creating a busy, gaudy, or baroque setting. Start with a fresh, elementary palette such as black, white, and shades of grey, and build on it with a few simple patterns within those hues. The patterns will compliment each other as well as add subtle, yet memorable detail to a minimalistic space with a mildly ethnic undertone.

In this Wear This Live Here, classic black and white are obviously the focal colors in this bedroom’s palette. However, they don’t dominate the space or exude any coldness because of the (fantastic) natural light this room allows, as well as the balance of white and the natural aspects in the patterns and hanging wall fixture. I always recommend adding an organic element to a simple room to bring in nature and warmth.

Yes, this Brandy Melville shirt dress is essentially a giant t-shirt. I regret nothing about that. I would wear it every day if it wasn’t so cold in San Diego right now. I think it’s about 60 degrees, brrr! Commence eye-rolls; I’m a a born and bred California cold-weather-pansy.

Now that we’re past scoffing at me, lets focus on the true beauty of such a simple piece that I consider a staple in my closet. The shirt dress is organically flowy, comfortable, classic and doesn’t reveal too much, but alas! It isn’t just for the “fat days” and sitting idly on the couch in your dirty socks eating Girl Scout cookies. But can I give a shout out to Samoas? Sorry, tis the season. livethere2

It shows just enough leg to pair with an elegant, strappy heel for that chic, party hostess look.

“I bet she made the desserts from scratch, she looks like she knows what she’s doing…” Is what they’ll say. I imagine.

But throw some bright sneakers under it and maybe a sun hat, or, if you’re feelin’ a little sporty, a baseball cap, and boom. Farmer’s market ready. Now you can go support small local crafters and buy that cute feather wall fixture to put in your black and white room. You’re so cute.

Some bright sneakers I adore right now:

Thank you Marilyn, I will pass along the kind comment to Niki!

Oh yes, I’m pretty darn smitten with that first room and the look – could be me! 😉
